Sales web sites are sites where the publisher tries to sell their own products, or pay per sale affiliate products.

The downside of a sales web site is it may not attract as many visitors as a content site - after all, who wants to read a sales pitch! Additionally, if you build a sales site around just one affiliate program, what would happen if that particular affiliate program ended?

You could get round some of these limitations by building a combined sales/content site (for example, instead of just sales pitches, you could review and recommend particular affiliate products that you know are good), using several affiliate programs, and actively advertising your site.

On a positive note however, sales sites do often earn higher amounts per visitor to the site than content sites, so you might be making enough money per visitor to advertise your site on pay per click search engines.
